What are some signs of disease or sickness in reptiles?

Mites

Mites are small black parasites that dig their way under reptiles scales and begin to infest. Mites are typically caused by poor husbandry practices and hygiene, or lacking quarantine practices upon purchasing new reptiles. Signs of mites are small black dots, typically around their heads and vents.

"Snake mites reproduce very quickly and build up to high numbers, causing infections from their feeding, especially within nostrils, skin folds and eyes. If left untreated, they have a serious effect on both snakes and lizards" - Queensland Captive Reptile Code of Practice

Mouth Rot/Canker

Mouth Rot or Canker is the necrosis of the tissue inside a snakes mouth. Mouth Rot can be caused by incorrect temperature and humidity, mouth injuries and malnutrition. Signs of mouth rot is a foamy, gaping mouth, refusal to eat, and discolouration of the mouth.

Respiratory Infections

Respiratory Infections often occur alongside mouth rot. The signs of a respiratory infection are audible breathing, nasal discharge, weight loss and refusal to eat.

What are some tips to preventing disease within your collections?

Disease in reptiles is generally very easy to avoid by providing adequate light, heat, food, water for each particular species and putting in place strong quarantine measures when introducing new snakes to your collection. If you notice any signs of disease in your reptiles, quarantine affected animals and take to the vet for treatment as soon as possible in order to prevent further spread.
